It has multiple layers of protection starting with the first layer of protection being the skull or cranium , which acts as armor shielding the brain from blows. The next layer of protection is the meninges which has three membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord to keep it from being damaged by contact with the inside of the skull. The final layer of protection is the cerebrospinal fluid CFS that the brain and spinal cord basically float in. This protection does have its limits.
In mammals, the meninges are the dura mater , the arachnoid mater , and the pia mater. Cerebrospinal fluid is located in the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater. The primary function of the meninges is to protect the central nervous system. The dura mater Latin : tough mother also rarely called meninx fibrosa or pachymeninx is a thick, durable membrane, closest to the skull and vertebrae. The dura mater, the outermost part, is a loosely arranged, fibroelastic layer of cells, characterized by multiple interdigitating cell processes, no extracellular collagen, and significant extracellular spaces.
Some infants who are later diagnosed with autism have too much fluid between the brain and skull, according to a study published today in Biological Psychiatry 1. The extent of the fluid accumulation at 6 months of age can predict whether a child will be diagnosed with autism at age 2. The findings point to a possible biomarker that could help doctors detect autism early. Clinicians typically diagnose children with autism around age 4, after observing difficulties in social interactions, along with restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. But signs of autism are likely to be present in the brain much earlier.
