What is in Del’s trunk in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”

planes trains and automobiles ending

Just watched "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" for the first time since I was very young. Even though I only remembered parts of it, I knew how it ended, with Del.

It's been 30 years since John Hughes released " Planes, Trains, and Automobiles " on November 25, , and perhaps somewhere out there, Steve Martin is still trapped in some crowded transport hub waiting room or some motel bed with a beer-soaked mattress. The hit comedy proved Hughes could write about adults as well as teenagers, launched the domesticated-family-man phase of former wild-and-crazy-guy Martin's career, and set the gold standard as the ultimate Thanksgiving-travel nightmare. Advertising executive Neal Page's Martin return from New York to Chicago may have been the worst and funniest road trip since Hughes sent the Griswolds to Walley World four years earlier, but the writer-director wasn't just repurposing old material. In fact, much of what happens to Neal had happened to Hughes in real life. Before he turned to filmmaking, Hughes, too, had been a Chicago-based ad exec trying to get home after making a presentation in Manhattan.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a American buddy film written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung marketing executive, and John Candy as Del Griffith, a goodhearted but annoying shower curtain ring salesman. They share a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving with his family. Neal Page is an advertising account executive on a business trip in New York City eager to return to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving. After participating in a tedious meeting that ends without a decision, Neal unsuccessfully attempts to hail a cab during rush hour. He is further delayed after paying a greedy attorney for a cab that is inadvertently stolen by Del Griffith, a loquacious traveling salesman who sells shower curtain rings. Their plane is diverted to Wichita due to a blizzard in Chicago.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving-set comedy where two men battle the elements and a series of unfortunate events. The goal is to get from New York City to Chicago. What results is anything but the simplicity of that sentence. The trunk is an iconic prop piece from the film, and during the picture serves as the catalyst for a number of jokes. Before the characters of Neal Steve Martin and Del even meet, Neal trips over the trunk on the sidewalk while hailing a cab. The trunk also becomes a point of mystery as the film moves forward. What exactly is in this thing?
