I n my role as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it is my duty to lead an agency that helps create sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. During my tenure, one of the most frustrating things that I have witnessed includes congressional procedural tactics to delay nominations for Senate-confirmed positions. The games employed by one side of the aisle to deny the other side its proposals has the deleterious effect of hurting the general public. The obstruction of such nominations as these is harming many of the low-income people who rely on public housing and rental assistance. As the months of waiting for confirmations turn into years, one can only hope that Senate Democrats will abandon these fruitless delay tactics. Unfortunately, this seems unlikely based on historical trends and the recent actions undertaken by Congress. While the administration continues to push for border security, we would appreciate efforts by Congress to work with President Trump on a plan to protect all Americans from the ongoing humanitarian crisis that inflicts pain and suffering on innocent families.

Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. Prior to his cabinet position, he was a candidate for President of the United States in the Republican primaries in Born in Detroit , Michigan , and a graduate of Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School , Carson has authored numerous books on his medical career and political stances. He was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. As a pioneer in neurosurgery, Carson's achievements include performing the only successful separation of conjoined twins joined at the back of the head; performing the first successful neurosurgical procedure on a fetus inside the womb; performing the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins ; developing new methods to treat brain-stem tumors; and revitalizing hemispherectomy techniques for controlling seizures. Carson was the featured speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast. Carson's Detroit Public Schools education began in with kindergarten at the Fisher School, and continued through first, second, and the first half of third grade, during which time he was an average student.

Ben Carson was born in Detroit to a mother who had dropped out of school in the third grade and was married at age When Carson was eight, his parents divorced, and he went with his mother and brother to live with relatives in Boston. Two years later, they returned to Detroit, where his mother worked two and sometimes three jobs to keep their family off welfare. Even though his mother had little formal education, she believed in it and knew it was the only way out of poverty. She required her sons to read two books a week and to write book reports about them—in addition to their regular homework. She banned television and would not let them play outside until their homework was done.

The operation, which took place in , lasted some 22 hours and involved a member surgical team. Carson also refined a technique known as hemispherectomy, in which one-half of the brain is removed to prevent seizures in persons with severe epilepsy. He later became active in politics and served as U. Donald Trump. Carson spent his early childhood in Detroit. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, and thereafter he lived with his mother and brother, spending a brief period in Boston and later returning to Detroit. Although Carson showed potential as a student, he performed poorly in school until his mother challenged him and his brother with reading and writing assignments in addition to their regular schoolwork.
