Sign in. David Oyelowo Don't Let Go , Selma fills in the blanks on his career, including one credit he wishes he could get a do-over on. Watch now. Rock-and-roll icon Conrad Birdie is about to go into the Army, and plans are being made to arrange his final going-away concert. An ex-husband and wife team star in a musical version of 'The Taming of the Shrew'; off-stage, the production is troublesome with ex-lovers' quarrels and a gangster looking for some money owed to them. Two Americans on a hunting trip in Scotland become lost.

The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie", is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. The original Broadway production was a Tony Award winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a film , and a television production. The show also became a popular choice for high school and college productions.

The play opens with a motion-picture montage of Conrad Birdie, singing idol of teenagers, whose resemblance to Elvis Presley cannot be regarded as accidental. Albert Peterson, its director, has just had the disconcerting news that his valuable property, Conrad Birdie, is about to be drafted into the Army. Peterson's secretary, Rose, is not sympathetic. She is convinced that this is the best thing that could happen to her employer, who can now give up the music racket, go back to college, become an English teacher and perhaps settle down with her in a little apartment. In spite of this argument, Rose has found a way to save Peterson, and pick up a good deal of publicity for Birdie.

The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie", is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered today for his long career as a country music star, but in the late s, he was one of Presley's rock 'n' roll rivals. Albert finds himself in trouble when his client, hip-thrusting rock and roll superstar and teen idol singer, Conrad Birdie, is drafted into the army, leaving his heavily indebted firm in jeopardy. Albert begs a General not to take his one hope into the army, not until he sings a song Albert has composed for the man. Having long been stuck in a sort of romantic limbo for eight years, Rosie longs for the Albert she once knew, before he wrote Conrad's first hit and abandoned those plans to pursue the seedier music industry, begs him to keep his promise, marry her, and become an aspiring English teacher, rather than a failed songwriter. He agrees to do so as soon as the company is in the red, and she agrees.

Bye Bye Birdie

It has a large number of teenage parts, most of them easy to sing and perform, and the plot, such as it is, is all about the generation gap. - Thirty-two years later, the current Conejo Players production is a walloping hit.

50 Years Older, Birdie Returns to the Nest

THAT this American musical should centre upon an English " pop " singer of the Beatle type when his original was already to hand in the shape of Elvis Presley, is evidence of how wide a currency our version of this class of entertainer obtains nowadays. Although he has an important role, the magnetic Conrad Birdie is not the hero of the play, but rather his manager Albert Peterson, aided by the latter's secretary Rose Alvarez. She urges Albert to abandon this mode of existence and fulfil his academic calling, but he must first find fifty thousand dollars compensation for Conrad and the 3 Birdies upon termination of contract due to their having been conscripted into the American Armed Forces. Rose soon has a plan to realise this sum. News of the call-up so upsets one young fan that Albert feels obliged to restore her spirits in Put On a Happy Face. The Birdies' reception by the local worthies is the occasion for Conrad's " pop " philosophical Honestly Sincere , which provokes the usual screams and faintings not always confined to the teenage generation. When Albert's Mother non-singing mischievously introduces the vampish Gloria non-singing to Albert, Rose responds by getting Kim's " steady," Hugo Peabody non-singing , to wreck the television show by settling his differences with Conrad in front of the cameras.
