Neil Young News. While the interpretation of lyrics presented here is composed of several viewpoints, there is little consensus on the exact meaning of Neil's songs. The themes and symbolism of Young's songwriting provide a rich tapestry on which to project various meanings and analysis. The song has become an iconic anthem and it's status continues to rise as more and more artists cover the song. Young's lyrics are considered to be an indictment of the politics of the 's.

In a confusing age, as the Berlin Wall fell, Young suddenly emerged with the same currency he'd had in the Vietnam era. It would become his best-known song in ages a bitterly ironic theme for the emerging post-Communist period and his highest-ever charting track on the U. And, like this comeback in fact, like so many things surrounding the mercurial Young "Rockin' in the Free World" was drawn from an unexpected moment. I thought of the first line, ' Rocking in the free world, keep on rocking in the free world. The cinematic "Crime in the City" stretched its gritty narrative over almost nine minutes, while "Heavy Love" still stands as one of Young's most ferocious moments and that's saying something. On the other hand, "Hangin' on a Limb" unfolded as a tender, stripped-down ballad.

Exclusive Features

This feature originally ran in Sounds simple, right? Oh, if only. Yes, the hits are important. But any best-of Neil Young list should also cover his three distinct personalities: the folky Neil, the loud Neil, and the weird Neil. Did we succeed?

Freedom is the 17th studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young , released on October 2, Freedom effectively relaunched Young's career after a largely unsuccessful decade. After many arguments and a lawsuit , Young left Geffen Records in and returned to his original label, Reprise , with This Note's for You. Freedom , however, brought about a new, critical and commercially successful album. Very different recording sessions made for a very eclectic album. Two other songs "Crime in the City" and "Someday" had been recorded in with the rhythm-and-blues-oriented Bluenotes band from Young's previous album, This Note's for You.

A few years before that rollicking Bluenotes album, L. So Neil and I met and we became good friends, and after that record he called me and asked me to continue working on Life with David Briggs, and after that one I actually called Neil and said I wanted to do a Big Band record because I really like horns. At that point, [bassist] Rick Rosas and I were playing for Joe Walsh, and that led us into an invitation to come out and give it a go. Rick and I and Poncho [Frank Sampedro of Crazy Horse fame; he also toured with The Bluenotes] fell into this four-piece hard rockalmost punk rockthing with Neil, and that was the band known as The Restless. The Freedom record was a culmination of the end of The Bluenotes sessions that sort of melded into the heavier rock stuff that became The Restless and finally, ultimately, became the Freedom record. Though often thought of as a patriotic flag-waver because of the chorus , the song is actually a bleak portrait of an American landscape that includes the homeless, drug addicts and selfish energy consumption. I have a really distinct memory of this giant notepad he always used at the timea sketchpad on an easeland he would write out these lyrics in really big print.
